Drosey's Web5 to Merge Web3 and Web 2.0, Built on Bitcoin Blockchain

Web5 is a combination of Web3, and Web 2.0 built on the Bitcoin blockchain, former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey announced through Twitter.

Published on his Twitter recently, Dorsey said that the new platform will aim at fixing the issue of securing personal data. “We struggle to secure personal data with hundreds of accounts and passwords we can’t remember. On the web today, identity and personal data have become the property of third parties,” the company said on its website.

Web5 is developed by one of the Bitcoin business units at Dorsey’s Block (formerly Square) called The Block Head (TBH). The company added that the platform’s core identity is decentralization and data storage to applications. It said developers will “focus on creating delightful user experiences while returning ownership of data and identity to individuals.”

While venture capitalists and their limited partners widely own Web3, the Web5 platform will be controlled independently by individuals.

Dorsey tweeted, “You don’t own ‘web3.’ The VCs and their LPs do. It will never escape their incentives. It’s ultimately a centralized entity with a different label. Know what you’re getting into…”

It further added that to make that happen. The platform will fulfil two core use cases: Individuals will have the ability to “own their data”, and they will be able to “control their identity”.

Here is a use case of web 5, this decentralized internet, given by TBD.

“Bob is a music lover and hates having his personal data locked to a single vendor. It forces him to regurgitate his playlists and songs over and over again across different music apps.”

“The way out offered by web 5: “Bob can keep this data in his decentralized web node. This way Bob is able to grant any music app access to his settings and preferences, enabling him to take his personalized music experience wherever he chooses.”

When asked by a Twitter user what makes Web3 not decentralized enough, Dorsey replied saying that “it’s the basis on a single point of failure systems (eth, Solano, *) and lies being told to people about who owns and controls it.”

Dorsey believes that Web3 is majorly controlled by a venture capital firm co-founded by legendary venture capitalist Andreessen Horowitz (a16Z) – who also cofounded the early internet platform Netscape and was an early investor in Facebook. He tweeted, saying Web3 is “somewhere between a and z,” referring to a16Z.

Andreessen has been an early backer of web 3 and has already invested more than $3 billion into various crypto and web 3 startups.

Solana Introduces Web3 Mobile Phone Saga

Solana Labs subsidiary Solana Mobile has announced the launch of the mobile phone “Saga” set for launch in 2023.

The flagship Android mobile phone is a modified OSOM handset which consists of speciality crypto wallet functions and the “Solana Mobile Stack (SMS)” software development kit for Web3 programs.

Solana said that the $1000 mobile phone has “unique functionality and features tightly integrated with the Solana blockchain, making it easy and secure to transact in web3 and manage digital assets, such as tokens and NFTs.”

Saga designer OSOM is a leading Android development company. The company has built computing hardware for Google, Apple, and Intel, among others.

Saga was introduced at an event in New York. The event also introduced Solana Mobile Stack, a framework for Android allowing developers to create rich mobile experiences for wallets and apps on Solana and create a “Secure Element” for private key management.

“The Solana Mobile Stack SDK is available to developers now, and Saga is available for pre-order starting today, with delivery in early 2023,” Solana said in an announcement.

Solana’s biggest mobile-focused bet will feature a Web3 dapp (decentralized app) store, integrated “Solana Pay” to facilitate QR code-based on-chain payments, a mobile wallet adapter and a “seed vault” that will store private keys deep within the recesses of the phone.

“Saga starts from first principles to create a mobile experience for individuals, developers, and ecosystem participants that opens a new era of mobility,” said Jason Keats, co-founder and CEO of OSOM. “The world needs novel hardware to embrace the future that is web3, and building out an ecosystem that looks to the future without being burdened by past legacy ecosystems is hugely exciting for us.”

According to Solana, Saga’s specifications include a 6.67” OLED display, 12 GB RAM, 512 GB storage, and the latest flagship Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 Mobile Platform, the security features of which will enable the Solana Mobile Stack’s Seed Vault.

“With the addition of a Secure Element built into the device, the Seed Vault keeps private keys, seed phrases and secrets separated from the application layer yet still capable of interacting with apps running on the device or in a mobile browser,” Solana said.

BNB Chain Partners with Google Cloud to Enhance Web3 DApps

Layer-1 blockchain technology, BNB Chain, has announced its partnership with Google Clouds, a collaboration that will see decentralized applications and smart contracts hosted on the protocol gain access to the cloud service provider’s infrastructures.

While there is a growth in the number of decentralized cloud infrastructure service providers in the blockchain world, centralized alternatives still have some competitive advantage over protocols looking to host their servers. As a major player in the cloud infrastructure world, Google Clouds has somewhat been less visible when compared to Amazon Web Services (AWS) amongst crypto firms.

The partnership between BNB Chain and Google Cloud is a strategic cooperation and will see as many as 1500 DApps residents on the former utilize the cloud’s advanced analytics for on-chain data. Per the terms of the partnership, “about 150 projects under a BNB-focused accelerator program will also get ‘accelerated access’ to Google Cloud’s startup support program.”

“Google Cloud is a very good Web2 player and has really done a lot of Web3 stuff. It’s important for us to just work with big players who have big visions, and we share the same DNA and same visions,” said Gwendolyn Regina, investment director of BNB Chain.

The Google Cloud and BNB Chain partnership is not a new thing, given that many tech giants nowadays are exploring avenues to link up with active players in the space. Back in October 2020, Google Cloud joined the EOS blockchain as a block producer candidate.

Besides the active engagement on the part of Google Cloud, other major players, including Microsoft Azure and AWS, also have highly acclaimed partnerships with exchanges and protocols. In one of such deals, Crypto.com revealed it adopted AWS as its cloud service of choice for scalability and security back in December 2020 as it looks to establish its footholds in the ecosystem at the time.
